When we feel that we are in danger or would like to ask for protection, we run to St. Michael the Archangel. We often pray to him to shield us from harm and keep us safe as we go through our day.
Who is St. Michael the Archangel?
Who is St. Michael the Archangel? Is he an angel or a saint? St. Michael is not the saint that we refer to as human beings that attain the title of being a saint. But instead, St. Michael is an archangel. An Archangel is an angel with the highest rank. He is known as God’s warrior and defender of the Church against evil.
The Origin Story of the Prayer to St. Michael
The prayer to St.Michael began in a very interesting story that involves Pope Leo XIII. On Oct 1, 1884. According to accounts, after the Pope celebrated Mass, he unexpectedly froze and stood in front of the altar, appearing to be in a trance. After his trance, the Pope went to his study and composed the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. He immediately instructed his staff to spread the devotion to be prayed throughout the Church. The Pope then explains that he heard the Lord and satan talking near the tabernacle, and in the conversation, satan was bragging about how he could destroy the Church in 70-100 years if he were given the opportunity.
This story and conversation are evocative of the prologue to the book of Job, wherein Satan asks God for permission to tempt Job’s faith.
Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle,
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him we humbly pray, and do thou,
O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God,
cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
