The custom among the Jews of His day was to have long hair, the Pagan Greeks and Romans had short hair.
One of the laws of the Torah is, “Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard..” Leviticus 19:27 Which is interpreted as not cutting your hair short. In modern days, it is why Ultra Orthodox Jews keep peyison, or side locks.
