This one is for all you parents out there of which I am not (yet).

What kinds of things did you to help raise your kids Catholic? What did you do to help transmit the faith?

Whether it was activities, family events, etc. I just want to know what parents do to make sure their children have a foundation in their faith. Thanks!

Early foundation of teaching prayers before bedtime, before and after meals.

Talking about Jesus, reading lots of Children books/bible stories,

    going to mass,

and we also have a library of bible story videos that really helped.

Now that she is older, of course CCD classes

and also a family-wide commitment and participation in one hour of perpetual adoration a week.

::nods:: Good, and also, I wanted to add that now that our daughter is a pre-teen, she is taking up an interest and passion herself. If she has questions, we point her in the right direction. If she has a desire to explore more, we give her options. She has the foundation and now she is building on that on her own with our encouragement.

I have been told that it is most important for a parent to live the faith. Also, children respond more effectively to almsgiving than just Sunday mass.

Yeah, I noticed that pretty much everyone responds better to outside-of-mass activities. For my life they were crucial or else I probably wouldn’t be as enthused about my faith.

My kids have gone to Catholic schools since Kindergarten, we go to mass every Sunday, we have what I would describe a Catholic household. Recently my high schooler had a friend ask him to go with his church on a weekend trip with his church. Since this friend went to Catholic high school I assumed he was Catholic and that this would be with his Catholic Church – wrong! After I gave him permission I found out this was not a Catholic church trip but rather a protestant trip. I have no problem with my son being friends with this boy as he and his family are very nice people but not knowing the content of this trip it scared me. Fortunately my son had a conflict for the weekend and wasn’t able to go.

I feel that as a Catholic parent raising my kids Catholic that I have not done enough to educate them in the Catholic teachings and beliefs. But, I also feel that the Catholic school has not done enough either. My fear for this trip was that my son be challenged in his beliefs just enough to put the seed of doubt in his mind. I was challenged 5 years ago and could have easily, through ignorance, left the Church. It has taken 5 years of study to know that the Catholic Church is the church that Jesus Christ instituted. But is my 15 year old equipped to answer these questions?

So, now I am teaching the kids as I learn about various teachings and beliefs of the Catholic church, but I also need help from the Catholic school system as well as the parish who can’t seem to attract the attention of the teens in the youth groups.

Is it wrong of me to expect the school and church to help?

Of course not. I would think the Catholic school would be educating the youth to know their faith and be equipped to answer these questions. The problem is that many Catholic schools have removed the religion component (oddly enough) from their curriculum.

I am about to enter the youth ministry profession and I believe that it is our duty to assist the parents and families in helping the youth to be educated about their faith.

What’s interesting is you addressed one of my fears with having children and that is not educating them enough in the faith. But, my wife (in less than 4 months) and I will do the best we can.
