Our Father

The Origin of the Our Father

The “Our Father,” also known as the “Lord’s Prayer,” is one of the most fundamental and widely recited prayers in Christianity. It holds a central place in Christian worship, and its origins can be traced back to the New Testament, specifically in the Gospel of Matthew (6:9-13) and the Gospel of Luke (11:2-4).

The prayer serves as a model of how Christians should approach God in their supplications. It begins with an acknowledgment of God’s holiness and a plea for His kingdom to come and His will to be done on Earth as it is in heaven. The prayer then includes petitions for daily bread, forgiveness of sins, and protection from temptation. It concludes with a doxology, praising God’s power and glory.

The Our Father embodies essential Christian themes of dependence on God, forgiveness, and divine sovereignty, making it a unifying and cherished prayer for Christians across denominations.

Our Father Prayer

Our Father,
Who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.
