He may not have been a friend of the Catholic Church, and he may have taught error, but the Church Teaches that for those who are raised in an enviornment that is so hostile to the true teachings of Jesus, or has not heard the word preached, we leave the Judgement of their souls up to God. I for one will offer prayers for the repose oh his soul. It is by Christ’s grace, which is ordinarily dispensed by His Church through Christ’s actions in the sacraments that we normally come to salvation. Outside of the normal means God may (we have no assurances but we may speculate) offer hope for salvation, not based on the false religion they belonged to, but on the basis of God judging us by His own Justice and Mercy.
