[u:9kmcwgnq][b:9kmcwgnq]1 Corinthians 13:[/b:9kmcwgnq][/u:9kmcwgnq]
[b:9kmcwgnq]1[/b:9kmcwgnq] If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love[/color:9kmcwgnq], I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. [b:9kmcwgnq]2[/b:9kmcwgnq] And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. [b:9kmcwgnq]3[/b:9kmcwgnq] If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. [b:9kmcwgnq]4[/b:9kmcwgnq] Love[/color:9kmcwgnq] is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love)[/color:9kmcwgnq] is not pompous, it is not inflated, [b:9kmcwgnq]5[/b:9kmcwgnq] it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, [b:9kmcwgnq]6[/b:9kmcwgnq] it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. [b:9kmcwgnq]7[/b:9kmcwgnq] It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. [b:9kmcwgnq]8[/b:9kmcwgnq] Love[/color:9kmcwgnq] never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. [b:9kmcwgnq]9[/b:9kmcwgnq] For we know partially and we prophesy partially, [b:9kmcwgnq]10[/b:9kmcwgnq] but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. [b:9kmcwgnq]11[/b:9kmcwgnq] When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things. [b:9kmcwgnq]12[/b:9kmcwgnq] At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known. [b:9kmcwgnq]13[/b:9kmcwgnq] So faith, hope, love[/color:9kmcwgnq] remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love[/color:9kmcwgnq].

I know it is just a technicality, but the English word for love can often be quite vague. I guess this is one instance in which biblical translations can make a difference, but I much prefer the “charity” of the Douay-Rheims to “love”, which seems to compliment the vulgate’s [i:1h4fnz8b]caritas[/i:1h4fnz8b]. The essential meaning is the same though.

I remember listening to Tim Staples explain how in Greek there are different levels/ways of the word “Love”. I found interesting because as you noted, the word Love in English is vague and I would add that it’s also been diminished to something that you can say to an object.

When our Lord asked Peter “Do you Love me Peter?”
Peter responded “You know I Love you”
Our Lord responded “Do you Love me Peter?”
Why did he repeat it? Cause our Lord knew Peter was not talking about the [b:109qgk5e]intense firey love[/b:109qgk5e].

Peter most likely saying “ya I like you, your a cool guy”.

There is a wonderful translation of the New Testament by a guy named Wuest. It is definitely from the Protestant perspective, but I love the way he translates this passage that Victor mentions…

I don’t have it here, but it reads something like this:
Jesus asks, “Simon bar Jonah, do you love me with a love called out of your heart by my preciousness to you?”
Simon answers, “Yay, Lord, you know I have a friendly feeling for you.”

And on.

The last time, Jesus asks him if Peter has a friendly feeling for him, and Peter affirms that.

I’ve been cautioned not to read too much into that, that koine Greek was flexible concerning use of words interchangably, but it is wonderful to ponder that.
