I have not read much of C.S. Lewis’ works, but I liked this passage that was written by him (it’s quoted below) and I was wondering if anyone else has read any of his works and/or recommends them?
[quote:3tc6ktaf] When I come to my evening prayers and try to reckon up the sins of the day, nine times out of ten the most obvious one is some sin against charity; I have sulked or snapped or sneered or snubbed or stormed. And the exuse that immediately springs to mind is that the provocation was so sudden or unexpected; I was caught off my guard, I had not time to collect myself….Surely what a man does when he is taken off his guard is the best evidence for what sort of man he is. Surely what pops out before the man has time to put on a disguise is the truth. If there are rats in the cellar you are most likely to see them if you go in very suddenly. But the suddenness does not create the rats: it only prevents them from hiding. In the same way the suddenness of the provocation does not make me an ill-tempered man: it only shows me what an ill-tempered man I am….Now that cellar is out of reach of my conscious will….I cannot, by direct moral effort, give myself new motives. After the first few steps….we realizethat everything which really needs to be done in our souls can be done only by God. [/quote:3tc6ktaf]
Clearly we need God on our team to battle against our human faults. ” title=”Very Happy” /> Also, I wanted to share this quote to find out what others thought.
Not a big reader of CS Lewis, but you made me one now. ” title=”Wink” />
That was an awesome truth he stated. It really made me think of those times I did not have time to collect myself either. Wretched man that I am in times unexpected. Only with the grace and mercy of our Lord can I change my soul.
