:” title=”Question” /> Why is it called “the holy see” what does “see” mean?
It means chair.
The Holy See is a reference to an office. Just as a king’s authority is symbolized by his throne, so a bishop’s authority is symbolized by his see. The Pope, as a bishop, has his own see and it is singularly known as the Holy See.
Maybe we should just call it The Holy Seat.
