“Has the Catholic Church done enough to stop sexual abuse by priests?[/color:2cqj1euu]” is the title of a new poll at [b:2cqj1euu]CNN[/b:2cqj1euu][/color:2cqj1euu].com.
92% of over 95,000 voters (at the time of this posting) say “no.” This is in addition to the results of survey data being released on the number of sexual abuse cases: http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/02/16/church … index.html
My question is though, what [b:2cqj1euu]can[/b:2cqj1euu] the Catholic Church do about child molesters? It’s not like we breed them. I believe the ratio of molesting priests is the same as the general public. I certainly do not condone the behavior, but in the end it comes down to the individual who makes the choice to molest a child, not the rules of an institution.
I mean, in all fairness CNN should be asking “Has the United States government done enough to stop sexual abuse?” There’s only so much an institution can do, but it really lies within the individual. If someone is a molester then that person will molest people regardless of their victim’s sex or of their own occupation.
Sexual abuse is an issue of power and dominating over another person – not wearing a chasuble.February 20, 2004 at 4:32 am #2461

So were you involved in the study?February 21, 2004 at 10:04 pm #2480
I never heard anything about it. In fact, I only saw the article when a friend of mine sent me a link because I went to John Jay.February 23, 2004 at 7:09 pm #2499

So, once again we have media hype, eh? I guess they’ll do anything to sell a story.February 24, 2004 at 3:49 am #2503
I was hanging up campaign posters in the halls at school earlier tonight when I overheard the main man in charge of the project. He is turning in the final figures tomorrow morning. He just finished them minutes before and was on his way home.February 24, 2004 at 3:38 pm #2507
So then what do you think of my comments about the sexual abuse thing in my original post?February 25, 2004 at 5:46 am #2515
I think the only thing the Church can do is to stop the cover-ups that are happening and avoid them in the future.February 28, 2004 at 9:26 pm #2543
