Okay, so I know I am being called to serve God while working for His church. I am already going to school for business management and have one year down. What do I need to do to prepare myself for this opportunity?

What exactly are you looking to do in the Church?

Just start looking for jobs – that’s what I did. Before I graduated college I knew I wanted to do youth ministry. I positioned myself to be able to do that kind of work through involvement at my school and Newman Center. I did a lot of theological study on my own. After a few years in youth ministry now I am in a master’s program for Church Management, finishing in May and spending endless hours perfecting my resume and applying for jobs.

Looking for jobs within the Church? I don’t see how I could get a job right now within the Church with only one year down into my degree. Outside jobs you mean that would be good experience. I too am being called to work with youth. I would like to get more involved at my school and Newman Center as well, but would that be considered volunteer time or is there a paid position for such a role? As you can see, I am at the very very beginning of answering the call.

Your fellow brother has his hand stretched out asking you for some guidance.

Sorry, I got caught up working on other projects I haven’t had much time to post. <img decoding=” title=”Sad” />

Depending on the location some positions are paid and some aren’t. It’s probably good to start with volunteer work to see if you really like it or not. That will help you discern. Is there a youth ministry at your parish (or a nearby parish)?

Oh don’t even, I am impatient. Anyway, I recently talked to my priest about this and I am volunteering Wednesday nights with the middle school youth coordinator. Yes, they do have a youth ministry I believe. I start this Wednesday. I am also talking to a Deacon about taking classes for a five year Pastoral Ministry Program that started last fall. Is going to be interesting to see how this all works out because of a combination of life issues right now.

Which Pastoral Ministry program – which school? St. John’s?

Find a good spiritual director and pray. I’ll add your petitions to my prayers too.
