The traditional reasons for people only receiving under one species include the possibility of spilling the precious blood; some people are germ phobic; and the Protestant errors regarding the requirement to consume both species to receive the entire, or the symbolic Christ.

While the Eastern Rite Catholics and Orthodox always receive both species at the Liturgy, in the West, Latin Rite Catholics have not “traditionally” received both for the above reasons.
