There is a wonderful translation of the New Testament by a guy named Wuest. It is definitely from the Protestant perspective, but I love the way he translates this passage that Victor mentions…

I don’t have it here, but it reads something like this:
Jesus asks, “Simon bar Jonah, do you love me with a love called out of your heart by my preciousness to you?”
Simon answers, “Yay, Lord, you know I have a friendly feeling for you.”

And on.

The last time, Jesus asks him if Peter has a friendly feeling for him, and Peter affirms that.

I’ve been cautioned not to read too much into that, that koine Greek was flexible concerning use of words interchangably, but it is wonderful to ponder that.
