Updated Purgatory Articles

One of the most popular posts on this website is Where is Purgatory in the Bible? It is one of a couple posts on Purgatory. Some months is drives almost 10% of all traffic to this website. It is also the post with the most comments.
It seems that people are very passionate about the topic one way or another. Most of the comments are from well-meaning Evangelical/Non-denominational/Baptist folks who from their comments misunderstand the teachings of the Catholic Church.

I’ve read all of the comments, but I do not post them all. Some are rather rude and others repeat points made by previous comments. Having reviewed the comments I have decided to revise the article to help illustrate the teaching of purgatory better. I hope it helps stimulate good conversation, not just people who want to evangelize me and pray that I read the Bible more.

So, check out the new and improved Where is Purgatory in the Bible? and leave me some constructive comments. Thanks!

  1. Hello,

I read your article about purgatory and how God still demands justice for sins committed by Christians. There is no scriptural support for this, as the following verses prove:

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” – Romans 8:1

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” – 2 Corinthians 5:21

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.’ ” – Galatians 3:13

“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.” – 1 Peter 3:18

“But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation” – Colossians 1:22

“Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.” – Ephesians 1:4

As you can see, these verses declare that once one is in Christ, God’s wrath does not remain on the individual, as Christ bore the wrath rightly due to us. We are still supposed to walk in the truth, but there is no more punishment for sins for the true believer in Christ.

    Thank you for your time,

    Jimmy

  2. Many years ago I began noticing how strange and umbiblical catholicism is, I started reading the Bible more and I have found that Jesus died for all sin He purged all sin. Purgatory does not exist.

    1. Your comment that Jesus died for all sin and that He purged all sin, leaves me wondering. It seems to me, based on your statement, that we can all go out and sin whenever we feel like it because
Jesus already paid for it. If that be the case I guess there is no hell either?

  3. Correction… That should read: No matter how well I live Christian the teachings (not life), Sorry for the typo’s.

  4. Hello,

I am not a Catholic but find Catholicism has an attraction that is most peculiar, I am Church of England by heritage and birth, which has much in common with Catholics I think.
I believe in Christ as savior, God and creator; However, I do not, and will not, ever be so presumptuous as to assume I will go to heaven despite my desire to do so, I recognize I am a hopeless sinner no matter how good I may life the Christian teachings… I would love to believe in purgatory as it seems like a get of jail card but I cant feel the conviction in my spirit even after study regarding its existence. Thus, I throw myself upon the mercy of Christ and leave the outcome in His hands… The thief on the cross was told he would be with Christ in paradise that day (despite the thief’s sins), I feel the same as that thief, I know what I deserve, but hope the Lord will remember me….Gal. 2:21, I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.

May God bless all who sincerely seek after Gods truth.

    1. It’a not that we don’t look hard enough in the Bible for purgatory, which doesn’t exist anyway , it’s the fact that we don’t look hard enough for Jesus in the Bible. Jesus did not go to the cross to give us purgatory. He went to the cross to give us freedom from judgement. His blood sacrifice saves to the utmost.

  5. Hi, I just wanted to make a short comment in response to some of the comments. I was raised in a non denominational church and pretty much believed because I was taught to believe that Every religion except for ours was going to hell… And then I grew up and have many Catholic friends whom I have NEVER heard a bad thing about another Religion come out of their mouths. I was NEVER looked down upon or criticized by them for what I believed. In return and looking into the Carholic religion myself have learned that what they teach is straight out of the Bible. They love regardless and are devout and sincere and show the utmost respect to God. Needless to say this was a great example
To me and I am now in the process of joining the Catholic Church. So, thank you for taking the time and explaining
    The Catholic faith.
    God Bless you.
